Conveying Equipment for Wood Pellet Plant

We supplied conveying equipment for Nature's Flame's wood pellet plant in Taupō – the largest facility of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The plant manufactures premium heating fuel from wood shavings and sawdust sourced from the timber processing industry. Since the plant's opening in 2010, we have continued to support its growth by delivering equipment for its expansion to double production capacity

Challenges

Wood pellets are fragile and easily degrade during handling. Biomass materials are often considered "difficult to handle" – prone to dusting, combustible, and requiring careful control to ensure safety and product quality. The challenge was to design a conveying and plant layout solution that maintained pellet integrity while providing reliable throughput, efficiency, and future scalability.

Our Solution

We worked closely with Nature's Flame during the original plant design to create a system that allowed for long-term expansion. The scope included an intake system, drying, sieving, size reduction, dry storage, and pelleting. CIL Ltd manufactured and supplied a range of conveying equipment, while also providing site layout design and ancillary equipment such as handrails, walkways, and ladders. Drawing on our industry knowledge, we specified conveying solutions tailored to the flow characteristics of biomass materials, minimising degradation and dusting risks.

Outcome

The Taupō facility has successfully operated for more than a decade, delivering consistent production of premium-grade pellets for the heating market. The robust design and scalable layout have enabled Nature's Flame to now proceed with its long-planned expansion, with CIL Ltd once again providing the conveying solutions required. Our equipment and expertise continue to play a critical role in ensuring the plant operates efficiently, safely, and to the highest quality standards.
